Information On Children's Franchises

From home tutoring, to fun, fitness and educational businesses; the market for children’s services and products in Australia is already massive and is continuing to grow annually.

With these growth levels, there has been an influx of excellent children’s franchise opportunities that many savvy entrepreneurs have been taking advantage of.

There is something for every type of business owner; from those of you who want a business where you are physically active on a daily basis, to those of you who want to nurture the artists in young people, to the entrepreneurs who want to work in the rewarding field of education.

If you would like to hear more about children’s franchise opportunities, then read on, as we have listed some relevant trends and facts below.

  • According to IBISWorld, brands that embrace flexibility could be at an advantage over the next five years. They said: “The Child Care Services industry is likely to change over the next five years (into 2027), as it adapts to a new operating environment following the COVID-19 pandemic. For example, new working arrangements in the post-pandemic environment may see families demand more flexible childcare options.” Hybrid working environments could lead to more families looking for childcare services at times that these services weren’t available in the past.
  • An area of franchising where there are many opportunities is within sports and physical activity franchise opportunities. Here, you can teach children about a game, but also see them grow as people. A recent survey from AusPlay gave some insight into the participation rates of children who play sports in Australia. It read: “42.2% of children (under the age of 15) participated in some form of organised sport or physical activity outside of school hours at least 1x per week (40% males; 44.5% females) and 14.3% three times or more per week (14.1% males; 14.5% females).” Therefore, there is a large market already in place, but there is certainly room for improvement with the percentages who are playing.
  • The survey further detailed these rates by breaking them into genders. It showed that participation rates for boys and girls in most age groups were similar; however, girls were more likely to participate in non-sport related physical activity; and boys were more likely to participate in sport-related physical activity and club sports in all age groups. Many of the sports and activity franchises aimed at children offer options for both boys and girls, which allows every child to play and enjoy sport.
  • It is an industry that is not wholly affected by recessionary times, with an article in Forbes recently stating: “Even in times of financial difficulty parents will continue to spend money on their children - and even more so if that spend is on products or activities that they feel will aid their child’s learning and development, assist their education or improve their general health and quality of life.” In other words, even during economic downturns, this is an area where there is still revenue.
  • A recent study, which was released by the Australian Institute of Health and Welfare stated that only 17 percent of children aged 2-5 met both the physical activity and sedentary screen-based behaviour guidelines on all seven days. Children's fitness and activity franchises have been working to ensure children are getting enough activity and exercise.
  • Children’s franchises are an excellent option for creative minded people, as many of the options available incorporate art and encourage the franchisee to embrace their inner creative.
  • A recent publication from the Australian government discussed the importance of the arts in children’s lives. It read: “Two thirds of Australians think that the impact the arts have on the development of children is big or very big. The arts also play an important part in education (89 percent of people agree). This confirms a wide body of international research on the impact of arts in education. For example, a recent study by the University of Sydney and the Australia Council for the Arts has found that engagement in the arts benefit’s students not just in the classroom, but also in life.”
  • Parents are seeing the benefits of this, which has led to children’s art franchises receiving a boost. The publication discussed above also stated: “Children who were taken to arts events at least once a year are 23% more likely to participate as adults than those who were never taken.”
Science, technology, engineering, and mathematics, or STEM as it’s also known, has also been growing in popularity in recent years. More and more girls are finding an interest this area of study. In fact, a recent industry report from the Australian Government found that the proportion of girls who know which subjects make up STEM increased by 3 percentage points, growing from 64% in 2019–20 to 67% in 2021–22. However, the study also found that “girls's confidence in STEM subjects is generally lower than boys and falls as they get older”. Thus, if this is an area that you have passion for and want to help future generations of women strive in the STEM field, then a STEM franchise could be the option for you.
  • The pre-school education industry takes in $2bn in revenue annually according to IBISWorld, with an excellent annual growth rate of 4.2 percent from 2014-19.
  • Meanwhile, the total revenue for childcare services was estimated to be around $14bn annually.
