About This Video
Chris Dobson owns Gutter-Vac Northern and Southern Tasmania. He and his wife Tess bought the business in February 2016 and have been running it for eight years. Before Gutter-Vac, Chris worked in a different franchise — giving him an insider's perspective on franchise mechanics before he ever saw the Gutter-Vac listing. Discovery was almost accidental. The opportunity popped up on Chris's Facebook feed when he was not actively looking — but he was in the right mindset, wanting to work for himself and dictate his own terms. A round of research turned an algorithmic suggestion into a serious shortlist entry. Diligence sealed the decision. Chris talked directly to the franchisees running the territory he was considering, then spoke with Warren and Anne, the franchise owners. Quickly he could tell these were people who knew what they were doing and cared about how they did it. A serendipitous Queensland holiday gave Chris the chance to fly out and meet Warren in his office in person — and that meeting cinched the deal. Onboarding was a week-long Brisbane training covering operational delivery and the business and accounting side. Once back home, Chris was introduced to the wider franchisee network through phone and Facebook — finding peers who had been in for years and were eager to share knowledge and guide his early stages. His message to prospects: do not be put off by the word "franchise" — the support network, brand recognition, systems and ready-made playbook mean you are never on your own.
